How to convert GPX to KML
1. Drop the GPX
Drag the file into the frame or pick it. A track recorded by a watch or a route planned in an app: both work.
2. Check the track
The track appears on the map with its distance and elevation gain, so you can check you are converting the right file.
3. Download the KML
The KML opens in Google Earth (File, then Open) or imports into My Maps (Create a map, then Import).
GPX and KML: what is the difference
GPX is the format of GPS devices and sports apps; KML is the format of Google’s globe and maps. Converting is mostly for showing a track in Google Earth or sharing it on a My Maps map.
| GPX | KML | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | TopoGrafix, version 1.1 in 2004 | Keyhole, then Google; OGC standard since 2008 |
| Read by | GPS watches and bike computers, hiking and cycling apps | Google Earth, Google My Maps, GIS software |
| Style | none: each app picks its own colours | line colour and width, icons |
| Point times | yes | not in a plain line |
What is kept and what is lost
What is kept
- every track and route in the GPX, as one KML line carrying its name;
- the elevation of every point;
- waypoints, with their name and description.
What is lost
- the time of each point: the KML describes the route, not how the outing unfolded;
- watch-specific extensions (heart rate, cadence, temperature);
- file metadata other than its name (author, link, keywords).
Frequently asked questions
How do I show a GPX in Google Maps?
The Google Maps app does not open track files. Use Google My Maps: create a map, click “Import” and pick the KML. You can then view the map in Google Maps, on a computer or a phone.
What colour will the track be in Google Earth?
Orange, 4 pixels wide: the style is written into the KML. You can change it in the track’s properties in Google Earth.
Does the track follow the terrain in Google Earth?
Yes: the line is draped over the ground. The GPX elevations stay in the file for software that reads them.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
