FIT file viewer: open a .fit file and convert it to GPX
FIT is the binary format of Garmin watches and bike computers, unreadable without software. Drop the file: the activity appears on the map with its duration, distance and elevation gain, and downloads as GPX. The GPX file converter also reads KML, KMZ and TCX.

How to open a FIT file and convert it
1. Get the .fit file
In Garmin Connect on a computer, open the activity, then the gear menu and “Export Original”. You get a .zip: unzip it to get the .fit file.
2. Drop it
The track appears with the activity’s duration, distance, elevation gain and profile. Course points from a course file become waypoints.
3. Download the GPX
The GPX keeps the position, elevation and time of every point: it opens in most sports and mapping apps.
FIT and GPX: what is the difference
FIT records everything the watch measures; GPX keeps only the track. That is why GPX opens everywhere and FIT holds more.
| FIT | GPX | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Garmin (Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer) | TopoGrafix, version 1.1 in 2004 |
| Encoding | binary, compact | XML text |
| Contents | position, elevation, time, heart rate, cadence, power, laps, sport | position, elevation, time; anything else through extensions |
| Read by | Garmin Connect, training apps | nearly every map and sports app |
What is kept and what is lost
What is kept
- the position, elevation (enhanced altitude when the watch provides it) and time of every recorded point;
- course points from a course file, as waypoints with their name;
- chained FIT files: every part is read in sequence.
What is lost
- heart rate, cadence, power and temperature;
- laps, zones and sport type;
- activities without GPS (treadmill, indoor trainer, pool): with no position, there is no track to show.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my watch’s FIT file?
The easiest way: Garmin Connect on a computer, “Export Original” on the activity page, then unzip the .zip. Plugged in over USB, a Garmin watch also shows its activities in the GARMIN/Activity folder.
My FIT file shows no track
The activity was probably recorded without GPS (gym, treadmill, pool). The file then holds measurements but no position to draw.
Is the duration the moving time?
No: it is the time between the first and the last point, breaks included. Garmin Connect also shows a moving time, worked out its own way.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The FIT file is decoded in your browser, by code written for this site; it never leaves your device.
